James B. Mitchell, Jr., Lecture Series:

Named in honor of a recent Superintendent of Schools for the Shelby County Schools, this lecture series is an annual springtime event in which a distinguished speaker addresses student leaders from the district's seven high schools.

The purpose of the lecture series is to cause students to think more broadly about the world in which they live. Speakers in recent years have focused on how to achieve world peace, rebuilding Sierra Leone after the civil war there, and making a difference as a citizen in one's community.

The 2006 lecture featured Rob Carter, chief information officer, of FedEx Corporation.

The 2008 lecture was given by The Honorable Ronald L. Gilman, Circuit Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.  Judge Gilman, in his unique style, presented an inspirational message on leadership.

The 2010 speaker was Dr. John Smarrelli, Jr., the 22th President of Christian Brothers University and its first permanent lay President. Over the past 25 years, he has served in senior administrative positions at Loyola University in Chicago and Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY.
